Tug of War, Old vs. Young
India has changed a great deal since 1949, when it became an independent country. It has gone from a largly agricultural nation to industrial economy. It has gone from a nation with little tolerance for other religions to a vaired and accepting society. India is becomeing a global force in the new world, but there is still a conflict between the old and the new Indias. One growing conflict of old vs. new in India is clothing. The traditional girl's clothing in India is the Sari. However, less and less girls are wearing Saris in these times, and more and more are wearing western clothing like T-Shirts and jeans. On the other hand, though more people are wearing western clothing, for the time being, the people of India are not letting go of traditions. An example of this clash is the picture below. Though this girl wears modern clothing, it is clear that she still cares about the traditions in her country.

Another growing conflict of old vs. new in India is the change of food. India has changing food tastes to keep up with the global market. Many younger Indians who have traveled overseas came back with a taste for western fast food, and many companies have begun to cater to that. Since 1996, Pizza hut has opened more than a hundred stores in India. These new chains have included many new flavors and pizzas that have a distinct Indian background. These new dishes appeal to the older tastes of traditionalists, but offer new food for the changing westernized tastes of the young people in India. Most of the New foods offered by fast food resturants are either vegeterian or non beef, due to the large population of Hindus in India. Most of the McDonalds that have opened up in India only offer fish and chicken burgers, but they are seeing a change in the demands of the new India that is stuck between keeping its traditions and stepping into Western Culture.

In conclusion, India's changes since 1949 have made a great impact on the country. Though India has westernized quite a bit, it is clear that the people are still holding on to their traditions. The result is modern day India- a place that has for the time being, successfully combined traditional India with the west.
